Introduction
The main focus
of this paper is to maintain a balance between our listening skills and to
identify the factors that we need to improve in our listening styles. In this
we will get to know about the listening style in which we are good enough, and
then we will observe in which style we will score lower and then that specific
factor will need to be improved. In this, we will also observe which factors we
can work on and what are the strengths and weaknesses of our listening styles
and how we can improve them.
Calculation of scores
Relational Listening

Importance of listening in
interpersonal relationships
The main
factor that is included in the importance of listening in interpersonal
relationship means the communication and the listening process basically that
needs the providing reactions and the answers of that specific person that is
speaking. If we talk about interpersonal
listening, then this factor is very important because miscommunication in a
relationship can lead to several damage. So we can analyze the importance of
active listening into a relationship (Callos, 2014) .
Hearing
We can
understand this term hearing as simply it’s an act of observing any sound by
ear. Even hearing simply occurs even though you are not hearing-impaired.
Listening
However,
listening is a process or an act that is chosen by yourself whether you want to
listen to a certain thing or not as listening requires proper concentration.
Difference between hearing and listening
The actual
difference between hearing and listening is that the process of hearing is
about how you perceive the sound and how you receive the sound or any wave
whereas, listening it the process of understanding the sound that you are
hearing and in the process of listening to we often use our sense too (Greene, 2018) .
Relational listening
Basically
rational listening includes the factor of listening to a definite message where
we need to focus, and it also deals with the feelings of the listener.
Moreover, relational listening revolves around the emotions and understandings.
I think when it comes to relational listening it’s not just about what you are
listening, but the emotions that are hidden in words are also important to
consider, and we should develop a relationship when those emotions that have
been said through words. As I also scored almost highest in relational thinking
because these are some factors that are really important to me, and I usually
take them under concentration.
Analytical listening
Analytical
listening requires more of your concentration as this listening is majorly
focused on the clarification and the meaning of the words that have been
spoken. It also include even when a song is being delivered even though the
vocal these also contain certain traits of analytical listening and how you
understand the mood of a specific sound and how you describe it is also a trait
of analytical listening, and I have scored good in this too because analytical
listening is also from one of my interests (JMC Activities, 2014) .
Task-Oriented Listening
Task-oriented
listening is also known as action-oriented listening. In this type of listening
the listener needs to listen to the exact message that the person wants to
deliver because that message must contain the information about what needs to
be done and might have less tolerance for listening to the motives behind the
task. The people who are interested in listening to the speaker are called
task-oriented listeners because they might have high-level interest in the
message of the speaker. They actually want to relate to the thinking of the
speaker. And if I will talk about myself then I’m not so tasked oriented kind
of listener, and that’s the reason I scored lower in this aspect of listening.
Critical Listening
Coming
towards and talking about critical listening then this type of listening
carries hearing about what someone is saying, and the listener tries to
classify major points of the argument and to congeal the opinion. This type of
listening majorly include that how the listener is taking the point that the
speaker is conveying as we can say when we hear a politician speak or any
debate we hear to the argument and try to reach the message of that certain
debate and the agenda behind that saying. This type of listening usually
requires your thinking courage. I didn’t score enough in this portion because
I’m not so debate kind of person (Lindberg, 2018) .
Well
I scored 36 in relational listening, 31 in analytical listening, and 22 in
task-oriented thinking and in the last 24 in critical thinking and as mentioned
I scored higher in relational thinking and lowered in task-oriented listening
and I think I need to improve my task-oriented listening because this type of
listening requires your constant concentration and I think I need to improve
this.
Conclusion
I conclude the
factor about my listening skills that I need to work on some factors about
listening because it’s all about how you relate to the other person that is
speaking to you and how you react to it, but these listening styles just don’t
need your emotions of relation with the speaker but you all have you match your
mindset with the speaker too, and these are some very important factors that I
need to take under serious concentration.
How to strengthen your interpersonal relationships at work or at home?
I think the
best way to strengthen my interpersonal relationship at home is to connect with
my family members more as this factor majorly include your emotions and the
connection between you and the speaker like there is a specific relationship
that needs to be built at how when it comes about interpersonal relationship of
listening especially at home (Sherblom, 2017) .
Based on the style you identified as your lowest score, what do you
plan to do to improve your listening for the future?
To
strengthen the lack factors about the listening style where I scored lowest is
task-oriented listening and as this type of listening requires proper
concentration of a listener and it also contains the factor that what so ever
the speaker is conveying we need to listen it properly and understand each of
the words that he had delivered because it must contain the information about
what needs to be done so I will work on this factor will try to be more
concentrative and will stay focused.
Explain how you will use nonverbal skills to improve your listening?
Well I
personally think that nonverbal skills like interacting with the speaker
through body language are very important because this means that how we are
developing a relationship with the speaker and as well as eye contact is also a
very important factor it can improve my listening skills very well (Skills You
Need, 2019) .
