PROCESS ESSAY Assignment:

PROCESS ESSAY Assignment: Write a process essay (min 5 paragraphs) What is a Process Essay? Process essays are found in a wide variety of subjects and disciplines. They explain how to do or understand things that involve an ordered sequence of steps. Examples of process essay topics include "how to buy a used car," "how to comfort a friend who has lost a loved one," "how to save a friendship," or "how to decorate an apartment when you have little money." Try to be creative in choosing a topic—there are countless possibilities if you give it some thought. Purpose The purpose of most process essays is informative: they tell readers how to do something. Clarity is vital. When a process can be done more than one way, a secondary purpose is to persuade the reader that your approach is superior to others. In such cases, you not only explain steps, but you also give reasons why your strategy is best (perhaps in a separate paragraph, or in the conclusion).

Audience The most important question to ask here is: What does your audience already know about the information in your essay? If your readers don't know what an Allen wrench is, you'll have to explain that basic tool before telling readers how to use it. Use your best judgement when deciding which terms/concepts need to be explained.

Structure I. Introductory Paragraph • Lead into your topic by engaging your readers' attention • Explain your topic, and give an overview of the process, what the results will be, and any benefits of this process. (If appropriate, state the number of steps involved.) • Use your thesis statement to note the outcome of the process, which can be the payoff to the reader of the essay.

II. Body Paragraphs

• Give each step its own paragraph. This means that your steps have to be substantial enough to require an entire paragraph. (Choose your topic well!) • Use a topic sentence with sentences that offer clarifications, anticipate difficulties, provide reasons for doing this step, and so on.
HI. Conclusion • Explain the outcome of the process, perhaps how the readers will know whether they're successful in following the process to its conclusion. • Mention other ways of executing the process, if appropriate, and give reasons why the process you have described is the preferable one.
