Public Health and Food Safety in Ghana
Abstract
Food practices in Ghana are very unhealthy. There is no check and balance on food authorities. Due to several death cases has come to view in Ghana. This study highlights the importance of eats hygiene food by consumers.
Introduction
Public health and safety measures regarding food are very important. Basically, food safety is important for consumers because it protects them from the risk of foodborne illness.  If consumers do not eat nutrition based food, they will bear illness, their health will be down or they may even die.  Therefore, there is great importance of safe food to all consumers. The following research is based on analyzing and identify public health and food safety in Ghana. Ghana has faced various concerns and problems regarding food safety and public health. There is no such food authority or organization that can evaluate hygiene food for consumers.
Literature Review
The problem at hand, food safety, and public health are one of the biggest issues in Ghana. Food suppliers and food chains play an important role in food delivery to the population. In Ghana, the national regulatory body is ‘Food and Drugs Authority (FDA)’.They are responsible for implementing and ensuring the food authorized policies for the safety of food. The primary responsibility of the FDA is to make public health good and provide them with hygienic food. Besides this, the ministry of food authority, health and agriculture are responsible for ensuring to provide healthy food to all consumers (Ababio & Lovatt, 2015). During just last years, Ghana faces different cases related to food and public health. The research article has discussed that in 2006, the country suffers serious borne illness which causes multiple deaths.
According to the FDA, in 2006 the loss of productivity in Ghana due to foodborne disease was 594,279(Ababio & Lovatt, 2015). Ababio and Lovatt have discussed that food hygiene authorities should take measures or step in order to cope with this situation (Ababio & Lovatt, 2015). The food authorities should regulate to enforce laws. Moreover, the author has discussed that there is also a need to increase public awareness about hygiene food and use of quality, safe food.
Another related study has discussed about food safety knowledge and public safety in Ghana. In Ghana, both public and private institutes which provide the food services directly to consumers and served both staff and clients (Akabanda, Hlortsi, & Owusu-Kwarteng, 2017). In this research, the authors have simply discussed that there should be food safety knowledge for the food handlers. As there is a number of food handlers in Ghana, thereby there is an increasing number of chances of food contamination. The food contamination is the major issue due to improper handling. Therefore, there is a need to provide the required knowledge about food practices to food handlers in Ghana. There must be a proper process to reduce the contamination of food in Ghana. In general, the food handlers in Ghana does not have any satisfactory knowledge about the healthy food, cleaning, and sanitation procedure to make the food enable to eat(Akabanda, Hlortsi, & Owusu-Kwarteng, 2017). It is therefore important to have a proper system to educate the food handlers. They need to be taught how they can handle the food without violating the integrity of the food and damaging the health of the consumer.
Food safety hazardous becomes one of the serious issues in Ghana.  The primary reason behind such incident and activities is people does not pay attention to hygiene food and safety of food. Another related research has highlighted the public perception about food safety and hazards risks in Ghana. Ghana currently faces various problematic situations about the food like it faces safety challenges such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and microbial contamination in smoked fish and meat pesticide residues grains in all vegetables, fruits. Due to this unhealthy food contamination, Ghana faces serious issues about death. Under research, it is found that in the last decade the annual death rate in the country was 420,000(Omari, Frempong, & Arthur, 2018). It was 2006 when almost 90,692 people died in Ghana due to hygiene-related diseases and other food safety challenge.
The author majorly discusses the reasons behind this issue is the lack of public worries and perception about healthy and hygiene food. There must be increased public level concerns should the selling, cooking and using hygiene food products in order to reduce the death related diseases in Ghana.
Methods
Mainly, there are two types of research methodology, one is primary research and other is secondary research method. In the primary research method, the researcher conducts new research and collect the data from the respondents. In primary research, there is no pre-existing data. Another one is secondary research data collection method. The secondary research is used to collect the data from already existing data sources.
The major tools or sources of secondary data collection are books, periodic, already data available data on internet, public libraries, governmental and non-governmental agencies, educational institutes and commercial information sources (Cunha, Marques, RESENDE, FALCO, SOUZA, & Loiselle, 2017). The given research had been conducting through secondary research method. The data is collected from research papers, journal articles, internet websites and different facts and figures under Ghana. In order to identify and analyze the food safety measures in Ghana secondary research method is used.
Basically, the secondary research method is used to collect the data it based on tried and tested data which has previously analyzed and filtered. Instead of the primary research method, this method is used because of a lot of advantages. One of the best advantages of conducting secondary research is that it is readily available. The secondary research is less time consuming and easily available at internet sources (Hewson, Vogel, & Laurent, 2015). It is less expensive; there is not cost of transportation, surveys, questionnaires and all that. The researcher can easily collect the data from internet sources and books.
The secondary research provides accurate data and evaluate the credibility of sources. Mainly, data collected by journal articles, books and periodic is usually very extensive and covers a large spectrum of issues. An organization can filter that data and consider only parts which they are targeting. Besides these, there are another numerous lot of advantages and benefits of secondary research like it provide effective data and reliable.
Result and Discussion
The data is collected from the journal sources and recent studies on food practices in Ghana. It is found that Ghanaian consumers are worried about their health and food safety. The consumers are worried about their food, they claimed that there is a lack of availability of fresh food for all consumers. The recent studies on food safety measures in Ghana conclude that in a year almost 40 Ghanaians suffer from serious dieses. During the last few decades, almost 420,000 death cases have been observed in Ghana (Akabanda, Hlortsi, & Owusu-Kwarteng, 2017).
A recent report from the media has concluded that there are a lot of cases has been observed related to food poisoning from commercial and institutional catering. The report has concluded that food poisoning occurs in different schools, commercial and commercialization catering. Under the study, this is examined that in schools
77% of food poisoning cases observed due to lack of implementation of food practices. Over more than 40 students hospitalized in adopted secondary school due to unhygienic food. Under institutional kitchen/ catering cases, this concludes that over 100 girls in Archbishop Porter girls hospitalized and they were in serious condition. Dozens of school students and the general public get hospitalized after eating food.
Additionally, 60% of consumers in Ghana says that food handlers and food serving boys do not wear gloves, proper clothing, and protective caps while preparing food. This led to the contamination of food and shows a negative attitude towards consumers. Under a study of review on food safety and food hygiene studies in Ghana conclude that in 2010, 250 cholera cases have been observed with 250 deaths recorded. Similarly, in 2013 90,692 death cases has been observed due to eating unhygienic food while 297,104 cases at various outpatient (Ababio & Lovatt, 2015). In the whole year, almost 77% of the total population suffered from serious diseases in a food establishment.
While it is concluded that there should be best food practices in Ghana. The good hygienic food practices need to be regulated and enforced for public health and food and safety. There is a strong need to regulate best food practices for the consumers as well as food handlers so that to reduce the death cases.
Conclusion
The following paper discussed the consequences of use unhygienic of food safety and public health in Ghana. During the last few years, there are a lot of death cases has been observed in Ghana due to lack of obeying food regulation and rules. FDA in Ghana is entirely responsible to make good public health and provide them good hygienic food. The research is being done through secondary data collection approach. The data is collected from journal articles, books, and websites. Under analysis, this is finding that in a year there has been a lot of death and eating unhygienic food death cases come to view. It badly effects on the health of consumers. Therefore, to solve this issue the food and development authority should take corrective actions and measures.
