Solution
6. Note
some words or phrases that are unfamiliar to you or that are used in a
special sense. Define each word,
referring to its contextual use in the article.
d) Sanctified
Sanctified is a word which is new for me and I found it
confusing while it referred to art. The meaning of sanctified is something
which is declared as holy, pure and free from evil. This term is used for art
while referring to art as something divine which was used for decoration of
tombs, for instance. The artwork in early times was used for rituals. There is
a divine effect and spark in the artwork, which makes it immortal. There is a
sort of magic in artwork which makes it immortal, the magic is simple and
plain.
e) Palpable
There is a tendency to interpret art based on attitudinal
gestures. There are some sorts of work which tend to persuade viewers and
readers. John Keats used the term “palpable”.
The meaning of palpable is something which is very intense, and appears
tangible. By palpable we mean that the poem or art is so intense that we can
feel it the way writer or artist is trying to show.

f) Commodification
Commodification means that something is treated as a
commodity. This term is used for piece of work and art which is not the
commodity of the artist when it comes to the real world. It depends upon the
viewer how to interpret it. There is a tendency to interpret art according to
different contexts.
7. Explain
how two specific concepts stand out to you as
noteworthy in some way. This can be something totally new to you or
something that you had never thought about in exactly this way {e.g. seeing it
through a new lens}. Refer to each concept in the context of the article.
c) The
article shows that art can be interpreted by the additional material provided
by the artists. There is a tendency to control representation of art according
to artists’ views. the artist can provide specific title or other mode of
explanation to let the people understand art in a specific context like “the
battle of waterloo”. The art is not left with the viewers to interpret them
according to the visuals; rather artists try to give a sort of direction to his
work by giving titles, and so on. This is a unique concept.
d) I
am surprised to read that the artwork loses its position once it leaves the
studio, and it depends on the use value. The art can be used for political
decisions and according to different contexts. The artists can no longer
control or abandon the process of contextual representation of art by different
regions and communities of the world. The decision to interpret rests with the
world, and artists has less control over the art.
8. Using
one of the items above, create a discussion question about the concept. Using
“how”, or “in what way” as your beginning will elicit detailed responses
instead of simple answers.
c) The
fact that artists control the interpretation of art based on supplemental
material, and the assumption that artist has least control over the
representation of art once it leaves the studio are two different things. I
don’t understand how the artist can control his artwork through heading only,
and how a piece of art is “used” for political gains and different contexts.
This is confusing. There is a need to understand that an artwork is accurately
conveying its intention like an artist showing the battle of waterloo through
work cannot be misinterpreted according to different contexts, because the gist
remains there. Secondly, the artist is providing heading or any supplemental
material not to control the viewer but to give direction to his work. These are
different views, there is no connection.
9. What
item {or items} did you find confusing, puzzling or perplexing in the
articles/video? Email your best question or questions to me for use in class
discussion.
a) The first point that we tend to represent art on basis of
our cultural knowledge, rather than objective view, is something confusing. I
don’t understand this concept. This heading is perplexing. We tend to recognize
objects in artwork. This needs to clarify.
b) The idea that artists use art for propaganda or to
persuade a reader is defined as something negative like Keats say that we hate
poems which are palpable. I don’t agree with this. I need further explanation
in this regard.
10. Assume
you have to submit the top five concepts from this reading to fellow
students. List the five concepts and how they might be important in your
growth, either as student of art, or a certain major.
f) The
type of material artists’ use is important as it shows his/her affiliation to
different eras like use of marble and ceramics show that artist has an
attachment to preindustrial revolution world. The content can be derived from
choices of artist about different material. Basically, this is a concept that
tiny details give different meaning to art work.
g) There
is a concept that an artist tends to control the context of artwork by giving
supplemental material and additional explanations. This shows that the artist
does not leave the artwork upon the public and let them contextualize it
according to the visuals.
h) The
artwork is something which is not the commodity of writer, and it can be used
according to different contexts. The artist has least control over the
interpretation of artwork once it leaves the studio.
i)
There
is a concept that the life is short, but art is long. This shows that the
artist becomes immortal through his/her work of art. Artists tend to seek
immortality through their works like comedy, poem writings, and so on.
j) There is a concept of iconography; this
is a traditional way of representation. We tend to see according to our prior
knowledge and culture. The innate psychological factors are the basis of
iconography.
