Learning Project
I
interviewed my grandmother about her relationship with major historical event
i.e. World War II.
The
questions asked and their answers are as follows:
Where
did you work during the war?
I was a student in school.
What
was your main wartime activity?
There was no wartime activity at that time. However,
there was a focus on promotion of democratic principles through education.
There was a huge impact of war on entire world apart from countries
participating in the venture. The intention was to promote education standards
to make sure that the youth would be a great success.
Were
you working outside home?
No, I was not working outside. I was in high school. The
war was a disruptive experience. The job rates were declined.
What
kind of activities you engaged in?
I used to read newspapers, books. I spent most of the
time hearing news on radio. There were articles in the newspaper which showed
how events were happening, and their potential impacts. There was hype, but it
is different from today. Today we have social media, and we can give our
response instantly. At that time, the sources of communication were little.
If
there were any family members or friends in the providing services in the army?
No.
What
is your opinion on war?
I am of the view that war is not justified. The effects
of war are devastating for mankind. It is a ruthless act. We should admit the
fact that ultimately, we have to decide things by peace. War is never a
solution.
What
were the feelings of your friends and family?
My friends and family was affected by the war. One of my
friends narrated experience of her family living in Japan. She portrayed the
fear of people in a way which was breath taking for us. I remember, I could not
sleep for one whole night when I came to know the feeling of dread experienced
by the communities.
Did
you change your habits after or during the war?
Yes, I changed my habits. I became a completely different
person. I started taking more interest in current affair because of the war. I
started reading articles, and formed my opinion regarding national issues.
Was
there any different treatment with you based on ethnicity or gender as a result
of World War II?
No.
What
were the social activities at that time?
There were no social activities at that time. It was a
time when people used to live a simple life. There was no thrill and glamour as
we see in our lives now. People were mostly busy in their own lives and there
was no show off. The social activities were going to parks, visiting relatives,
and so on. I went to school, music class, and so on.
What
was your memorable experience related to war?
When Americans dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, this was a big event. I can’t forget that day. This is fresh in my
memory. I have no words to explain my fear; you can see I am trembling when I
am narrating this to you. The massacre, the loss of humanity was indeed a
horrifying event.
What
were your feelings upon hearing news related to war?
I was shocked. I don’t think that a human being is cruel
enough to kill thousands of people and destroy a region in minutes. I was
stunned by the action of America. I felt poor for the people of Japan. Though,
the political views were against them, still it was not justified to kill
innocent people so brutally.
